Ganduje’s media aide Tanko Yakasai speaks on sack, arrest by DSS
The tale of former Special Adviser on Media to Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje of Kano State, Salihu Tanko Yakasai is that of rare bravery especially belonging to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) party.
Following heightened security challenges in the country especially in the Northern region, Salihu popularly known as Dawisu had taken to his verified twitter handle to decry the unattended insecurity causes calling for the resignation of President Muhammadu Buhari.
He said: “Clearly, we as APC government, at all levels, have failed Nigerians in the number 1 duty we were elected to do which is to secure lives & properties. Not a single day goes by without some sort of insecurity in this land. This is a shame! Deal with terrorists decisively or resign.”
Amid the outburst, the Department of State Security arrested Yakasai and transferred him to Abuja over his comments on the nation’s security saying he was being investigated for issues beyond the expression of opinions in the social media.
The DSS spokesperson, Peter Afunnaya, in a short statement said, “This is to confirm that Salihu Tanko-Yakasai is with the Department of State Services. He is being investigated over issues beyond the expression of opinions in the social media as wrongly alleged by sections of the public.”
Subsequently, the Kano state commissioner for Information, Muhammad Garba said the government was embarrassed by the “unguarded comments and utterances” of the media aide and he has been sacked ‘with immediate effect.’
“The governor also warned political appointees and public servants to guard against making statements capable of drawing superfluous controversy.
“The statement reaffirmed the commitment of Governor Ganduje to the policies and programmes of the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari,” the commissioner said.
After days of being quizzed, Salihu Tanko Yakasai was finally released by the DSS but was it with his ego?. This was confirmed by his father and elder statesman, Tanko Yakasai, a first Republic politician.
In his reaction to the arrest, Tanko Yakasai said it was not abnormal as he was used to such kinds of treatment noting that he was arrested in 1953 when he was 30 years old.
“Well, to a person like you, it will even be like abnormality. But to me, I’m used to it and I suffered from this type of arrests. The first time I was taken to prison was in 1953, when I was just 30 years or there about and since then I have been suffering this kind of thing. I was arrested, my wife was arrested and my father was also arrested. It is abnormal but not something that came to me as a surprise.”
Meanwhile, Salihu has once again taken to his verified tweeter handle to speak on his predicament.
He said, “After 5yrs in Government, the goodwill I got after leaving Government, is a million times more than the one I got when I got in. That’s indeed an honourable exit, which is rare in Nigeria. This is certainly God’s doing & I am eternally grateful to Him for His endless Blessings “
